GRAPHING CALCULATOR PURCHASE INFORMATION
Algebra
I (and future higher level mathematics courses) requires the
use of a TI-83, TI-83+ or TI-84 graphing calculator. Although
we have a class set of these available for student use at school,
it is imperative that the students have access to one of these
calculators at home. These are the calculators that the students
will continue to use throughout high school. Below are some
guidelines
to help with this purchase:
-
The only difference in the TI-83, TI-83+ or TI-84
is the amount of memory. Keystrokes are basically the same. Texas
Instruments
has discontinued the TI-83 but you may be able to purchase
one that has been used
- You may be asked if you would prefer a
silver edition of these
calculators. The silver edition simply adds more
memory but at an additional cost (approximately $20). This edition is
not necessary
for school.
- Do not purchase a higher level calculator
such as a TI-86 or TI-89. All instructions are given for the TI-83,
TI-83+
or TI-84. The TI-86 and TI-89 are very different and not as user friendly. In
this case, more is not necessarily better.
- During
the back-to-school sales, these calculators can be found for $85. Many
students have reported finding these
on e-bay for much less. Pawn shops also carry new graphing calculators at a
discount. A few phone calls may save you money.
- We do not place an order from the school for student purchase since
the cost at retail stores is less than we can get
from our suppliers.
- New calculators come with
a proof of purchase. Please save these to turn into the school’s
math department. It is not a check to determine if you have purchased
the calculator.
Texas Instruments
offers additional products to schools with a certain
number
of proofs or purchase.
