The state of North Carolina requires that all students take the NC Online Test of Computer Skills in order to assess their abilities with respect to computer terminology, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, telecommunications, and computer ethics. Students must pass the Computer Skills Test in order to graduate from high school but they get their first chance to pass it in the fall of their eighth grade year. Students who do not pass get the opportunity to re-take it in the spring.
